Governor’s Message

Fellow Lions, Lioness, Leo and  Lionette members:

They say life is short but there's no doubt summer is shorter, particularly this year. July started with a visit to Minneapolis and Jansje and I both experienced the highs and lows of attending Governor's training and the International Convention. Ten days of concentrated interaction with the other nine Governor's of MDA and their partners and the push and pull of attending classes and the other events deemed necessary for us, took their toll both physically and mentally and had us looking for the end. The ten days was tiring, trying and almost constantly demanding but it was an experience not to be missed and gave me an appreciation for what all the other former Governors have experienced. There were many new friends made and learnings absorbed that far outweighed the tight schedules and long days. Highlights for me included carrying a flag in the International Parade and having my ribbon pulled on the last day of the Convention, the official start of the Governor's term.

Our new International President is Eberhard J. Wirfs, a name that I seem to have difficulty getting my tongue around. His theme is “Move to Grow” and focuses on the Ginko tree
which has existed for thousands of years. You'll hear much more about this as the year progresses but the thrust is for continued growth in the Lions organization, more hands to do the work.

On the local front, work has continued over the summer on a number of programs. The most important perhaps is the preparation for an extension workshop arranged by the MERLO team to be held on September 18th, 19th and 20th There will be further communications announcing this and extending an invitation to appropriate people but two of the days will be devoted to the formation of new clubs and the third day will provide Guiding Lion training and guidance in recruiting new Lions to existing clubs.

The year is starting off well on a positive note, the meet and greet at Rideau Carleton went well, and all indications point to another successful year for District A4. Building on the strong work completed by the MERLO team over the last two years, we should be able to show growth for the 2009-2010 Lions year both in the number of clubs in our district as well as the number of members in our existing clubs. Nothing comes easy these days and we've forecast growth in the future for a number of years without the resulting success. This is the time to take advantage of the foundation that's been laid and by working together declaring, “The Future is Now“, growth continues from here.
