It gives me great pleasure to submit to you a plan of action to support cancer awareness in District A4. Cancer touches one in three Canadians and I'm hopeful that your club will choose one or all of the recommended options to make a difference for people living with cancer. Your committee has developed three options for you to consider in getting involved in the fight against cancer. They are.
(1) volunteering time, (2) raising funds or (3) making a donation.
Annually the committee is prepared to present a donation on behalf of the district clubs to the treatment centre of their choice (Kingston Regional Cancer Centre or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre). Media coverage will be arranged so clubs in our district will be recognized.
- The Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre holds a telethon in January and a donation will be presented at that time. Some assistance from Lions members (with vests) will be required to man the phones for a few hours.
- Arrangement will be made with the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre to present our donation at a public event with media coverage. More information to follow. For a small amount of money, we can provide a large number of students with an experience that will last a lifetime. Thank you again for your support.
ACTION: If your club wishes to support its local cancer treatment centre, it is recommended that club donations be made through the Treasurer of District A4 at the following address during the year:
Lion Sam Maddin 78 Chicksaw Cres Kanata ON K2M 1M7The funds will be kept in a trust account by the District. One cheque from the district will be presented to each centre. Your committee recommends that your club donations be sent before December 15, 2004. Please indicate on your cheque which treatment centre you wish to support in the memo portion of the cheque.
Clubs are invited to enter a team in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life event planned in the month of June. Don't wait for Spring, sign up now! An information document will follow directly from the Canadian Cancer Society. To obtain more information immediately on this event, please contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office or me at (613) 737-3883.
For Lions to offer their services in this area, the best program available in all our communities is the Canadian Cancer Society's transportation program. Club members are invited to sign up as a volunteer driver for the program. Volunteer drivers drive cancer patients to treatment centres (Ottawa or Kingston) and receive a re-imbursement of .29 per kilometer. For more information, clubs may contact the Canadian Cancer Society office in their community or me at (613) 737-3883.
