    Reading Action
    July 2, 2018
Welcome to the 2016-17 Lions year for the Reading Action Committee. The goal of this Committee is simple-help promote literacy within District A4 and help improve access to literature. The Reading Action Program is a 10 year LCI initiative brought forward in July 2013 by PIP Wayne Madden and his wife Lion Linda. Included for Canadian Lions is a partnership with Scholastic Canada, the Read and Rise Literacy Project, targeting kids from preschool to grade 3. Within MDA, the Reading Action Program is varied not only amongst Districts but between Clubs. Each Club can work, in conjunction with the District Chair, to design a program that works best for them based on their community needs. What is our District doing? What are some ideas? In A4, I am planning to work on the following with our Clubs 1-Collect gently used books from Lions and thusly from community members. The books can either be donated locally by the Club itself or given to the Reading Action Chair to be distributed to areas and schools in need. I will be contacting school boards for assistance with this 2-Educate Clubs on the Scholastic Partnership of a 50% discount on orders of a minimum of $100 and encourage them to purchase and donate the books 3-Where Clubs donate Christmas Hampers to those families needing a little assistance, include some books 4-Work with local Food Banks to have books onhand that families can take 5-Establish Little Free Libraries (keeping in mind municipal bylaws and regulations) painted in Lions colours 6-Suggestions?? Please contact me for more information and to get your Club started. YIL Lion Kim Sheldrick-Reading Action Chair facebook page A4 Lions Reading Action 613-821-3033
    Be A Donor - Ontario
    July 2, 2018
Sep 2016 Good Day A4 Lions Clubs within Ontario, Welcome to the 2016-17 Lions year under DG Lion Sue Wilkes. I have been appointed the A4 Chair for the Be A Donor Committee. I will be working closely with Trillium Gift of Life (TGLN), our MDA Chair, and the 8 other District Chairs. This committee will now consist of 2 parts-Be A Donor and Transplant Assistance. You may have noticed this is directed to Clubs within Ontario. Tissue and Organ donation is run provincially so I have the pleasure of setting up different information for the Clubs in Ontario (through Trillium Gift of Life) and in Quebec (through Transplant Quebec). Should you want the information for Quebec as well, please let me know. The Be A Donor portion deals with getting Lions, as well as the general public, to register with Service Ontario through Trillium Gift of Life to become registered tissue and organ donors. Our District has been given many resources from TGLN which include a popup tent, banners, brochures, pins, a designated website link and more. The goal is to have Lions members and local members of the public register to Be A Donor at Should your Club be hosting a public event, I am available to either attend with the tent etc, or lend it and promotional items to your Club to help inform your community. Depending on cell service, I can also have people register onsite as long as they have their valid health card. Should you wish to have me attend your Club, Zone or Region meeting, please contact me at the info below and I will try my best to accommodate. So far I have set up displays at Vernon Village Garage Sale Day, Firefighter Games at the EOFA Convention in Winchester, RCMP Sunset Ceremonies, Sutherland Ball Tournament in Pembroke, and the Merrickville Car Show. No financial support is required for the registration and information portion. YIL Lion Kim Sheldrick 613-821-3033 email- facebook-Be A Donor in A4-Gift of Life-Signez Don twitter-@A4BeADonor

Brockville Lions Music Festival

The Brockville Lions Club has presented the annual Brockville Lions Music Festival since 1951. The music festival offers classes in piano, vocal, instrumental, band and choral music.

The Festival Committee engages expert adjudicators to evaluate entrant’s performances and offer suggestions for improvement. The public is invited to attend the sessions to enjoy the music that is presented and learn from the adjudications.

Admission to sessions is free.

The adjudicators select some of the best performers for awards which are presented at the annual Stars of the Festival Night. The Festival Committee awards bursaries to students who are studying music at post-secondary schools.

Renfrew Hospice Presentation

Representatives of the Lions Club of Arnprior were all smiles on April 23 as they presented a cheque in the amount of $5000 to Hospice Renfrew.

This financial contribution marks a five year commitment by the Lions.

With this assistance Hospice Renfrew can expand its efforts to provide residents and their families with a comfortable caring environment. Residents can feel at home as much as possible and live remaining precious moments with care, comfort and compassion.

The Lions and Hospice Renfrew are delighted to be collaborating in support of palliative care in Renfrew county.

Over the coming months Hospice Renfrew will refurbish each of its six rooms for residents and dedicate each one to a Lions Chapter in Renfrew County.

The Lions Club of Arnprior is the fourth chapter of Lions in Renfrew County to be recognized for its support.

Previous Lions Chapters who have each made $5000 contributions are Lions Club Renfrew, Lions Club Beachburg and Lions Club Calabogie.

If you would like to make a donation or become a volunteer at Hospice Renfrew please visit our website at www.hospicerenfrew.caor call 613-433-3993.

Mobile Eye Testing

Lions Club of District A-4, in partnership with Canadian Council for the Blind and Ottawa School Boards, have established vision testing for students from junior kindergarten to grade 8. Lions volunteers from various clubs, conduct the elementary testing, which is then passed on to an optometrist who continues the process by performing and eye health examination. The program has been very successful. Findings show that 30% of these students require some kind of additional visual intervention and/or glasses.
